Multi-Million Pound Investment Brings New Jobs To Thornaby

July 2015 –  GMI Developments, in partnership with award-winning food retailer Aldi, has secured planning permission from Stockton Council for a new Aldi food store at Allensway, Thornaby within Stockton-on-Tees. The multi-million pound investment in the local area will bring up to 30 new jobs.

The new development, which received strong local support when the plans were unveiled, will provide a modern shopping environment for the community, close to local residential areas and transport links. Designed to be in-keeping with the surrounding area, the Aldi will be on a landscaped site fronting on to Allensway and Tedder Avenue, with free parking for customers.

Aldi’s existing stores in Stockton, Middlesborough and Yarm are already proving extremely popular, with Aldi customers typically saving between 30 and 40 per cent on their shopping. The new store will ensure that everyday items are available to customers at low prices, offering residents an alternative to the traditional supermarket offering.

The new development and will bring up to 30 new jobs to local people as well as additional jobs during construction and supply chain opportunities.

Work is scheduled to start on site October, with the store set to open in autumn 2016.

GMI Developments, successfully completed the regeneration of the derelict Tristar Neasham site in Thornaby Town Centre in 2013.

Chris Gilman, Managing Director of GMI Developments, said; “We are delighted to have secured planning permission for the creation of a new Aldi store in Thornaby. Our proposals were met with strong support due to the investment into the area, creation of new jobs and an alternative shopping experience. Aldi takes great pride in the style and design of its stores, with landscaping schemes a key part of the process and we are looking forward to commencing work on site to deliver this key amenity.”
