Multi-Million Pound Investment for Thornaby
News / 16 March 2015
Aldi and GMI Developments Ltd (GMI) have submitted a joint planning application for a new Aldi food store to Stockton-on-tees Borough Council.
Aldi and GMI hope to develop land off Allensway, Thornaby with a high quality, carefully designed food store, alongside landscaping and free customer car paring.
The plans received a very positive response when they were unveiled at a public exhibition in January 2015. Approximately 87% of all feedback received from the local community was in support of a new Aldi food store in Thornaby.
A spokeperson for Aldi said:
“We are encouraged by the support we’ve received from the local community for our plans to introduce a new food store to Thornaby. At our exhibition many local residents told us they currently have to travel to Stockton, Yarm, or Middlesbrough to shop with us. We feel a new store offers a great opportunity to increase local shopping choice and improve convenience for residents in Thornaby and the surrounding areas.
The Proposal will also delivery a multi-million pound investment to the local area and create up to 30 much-needed new jobs.”
Aldi has a unique offering and does not act as a one stop shop. Typically, Aldi customers will purchase value for money products in store and then go on to complete their shopping in nearby stores such as those in Thornaby town centre. The proposed store would therefore provide a complementary offer to Thornaby’s existing pattern of trading, by encouraging residents to complete their shopping needs within the town, keeping spend local and adding to the vitality of the area.
Chris Gilman, Managing Director of GMI Developments, said:
“Following the Council’s excellent work in helping with the regeneration of the Pavilion Shopping Centre and our redevelopment of the Tristar Neasham site last year, the proposed development with Aldi respresents another opportunity to enhance Thornaby town centre.”
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council will now determine the application and a decision is expected to be made in early Summer.
Aldi and GMI would like to encourage anyone who would like to find out more about this proposal to contact a member of the project team on the Freephone information line number, 0800 298 7040.
